METAMORPHOSIS
OF IDENTITY
Has society reflected on the changes in a woman’s psychological and physical state at the moment she transitions into the role of motherhood?
This is an irreversible process — a shift from a maiden identity to that of a woman/mother. The physical transformations the body undergoes are reflected in the panel through fragments of the female body, symbolizing re-cutting and, in a literal sense, stitching together and forming a new сущність (entity). Spiritual changes are emphasized through the symbolism of the shroud, pointing to the metaphorical death of the former identity and the birth of a new one. This process echoes the biblical concept of the death and resurrection of Christ.
Society shifts its focus toward the child, thereby diminishing and seemingly overlooking the difficult transition in which a woman’s identity undergoes not only physical but also profound psychological transformations. A woman’s body becomes more attuned to the needs of the child; bodily reactions to the infant’s signals are heightened. This rebirth is accompanied by a sense of new responsibility and deep changes within the woman’s inner world.
